Clad Coins
Coins with a core of one alloy, covered with a layer or coating of another. US half dollars from 1965 to 1970, for example, had a core of 21% silver and 79% copper, bonded to outer layers of 80% silver and 20% copper. More recently, however, coins usually have a body in a more economic alloy, with only a thin cladding of a more expensive material, such as the British 1p and 2p coins of stainless steel with a copper cladding, introduced late in 1992.
